The Centenarian Vision for The Municipality of Kathwana, in hundred years, is to be a vibrant City East of Mt. Kenya, to drive sustainable regional growth and to transform the county to be a haven for value addition.”
Kathwana Market started in 1902 as a small goat market center, with houses made of mud. Kathwana got its name from a small tree called Muthwana (Bachemia Discolor) that grew in its former location near the Maara River.
The larger Municipality of Kathwana has a total population of 59,599 people drawn from two wards and a section of Chiakariga ward. This is as shown in Table 3-1. At a growth rate of 3% p.a., the population for the Municipality is projected to be 110,871 in the year 2030.
Working with the University of Nairobi, the Municipality has managed to establish a centennial (100 years) vision for its physical development.
