The County Government of Tharaka Nithi, through the Department of Public Health and Medical Services, has been hosting a week-long fistula camp at Chuka Level 5 Hospital in partnership with AMREF Flying Doctors and the Mpesa Foundation. Now in its fourth year, this collaboration continues to restore the dignity of young girls and women through life-changing fistula repair surgeries, reaffirming the County’s commitment to improving maternal health and access to specialised care.Earlier today, the CEO of AMREF Flying Doctors, Ms. Tanya Nduati, paid a courtesy call to the CECM for Public Health and Medical Services, Dr. Gichuyia Nthuraka, during her visit to the camp. Tharaka-Nithi County Government Children and Gender CECM, Ms. Kelly Karimi Rwigi, together with Chief Officer Ms. Winnie Mukiri, on Thursday joined the Chuka Law Courts Users Committee in marking the 2025 Child Justice Service Month. The event, held at the Chuka Law Courts, was led by Chuka High Court Presiding Judge, Lady Justice Roslyn Korir, and Tharaka-Nithi County Commissioner, David Gitonga.The leaders expressed concern over the worrying rise in child abuse cases, noting that defilement and newborn abandonment remain the most prevalent and distressing violations affecting children in the county. The Tharaka Nithi County Government, through the Department of Health, has intensified efforts to combat snakebite envenoming, one of the most neglected tropical diseases affecting vulnerable rural communities.In partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Institute of Primate Research (KIPRE), the county has rolled out a comprehensive snakebite mapping exercise aimed at establishing the true burden, geographical distribution, and community awareness on snakebite management. The findings will provide critical data to inform policy formulation, guide resource allocation, improve access to treatment, and strengthen community-level prevention initiatives.This collaboration also prioritizes capacity building for healthcare workers and Community Health Promoters (CHPs), equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for timely and effective snakebite response.
